Fanless Blu-Ray Bitstreaming in Low Profile FF

This review is from: Sapphire Radeon HD5450 512 MB DDR2 VGA/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card 100291L (Personal Computers)
Finally, a low profile, FANLESS, bitstreaming card. Ideal in a low end HTPC. Delivers beautiful Blu-Ray video and enables Blu-Ray audio bitstreaming. Blu-Ray bitstreaming, a holy grail of the HTPC crowd, used to cost $200+ (installation headaches included for free). This card will do it for under $50 although you still need a software player such as Arcsoft TMT 3 (bitstreaming feature currently in public beta). Includes two low profile brackets.

Caveat, this card is not for gamers. It's fast enough for HTPC use but slow for gaming.

New life for a Dell Dimension 3100 with only X1 PCI-e

This review is from: Sapphire Radeon HD5450 512 MB DDR2 VGA/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card 100291L (Personal Computers)
This is not a typical product review, because I am using the board in somewhat unconventional installation.

The Dell Dimension 3100 has two PCI slots and just one PCI-e 1X slot. It does not have any 8X or 16X PCI-e slots. Shucks. I was able to install and run Windows 7 with Aero on a 3D-Fusion FX5500 PCI board but the performance was jerky even though it scored 2.8 on the Windows 7 performance page.

I found that this ATI HD5450 with 512MB could be had for 30 Shemolians after rebate so I bought it. But just one problem, the X1 connector slot on the Dell motherboard is of the type that only accepts X1 boards because the front of the connector is shrouded just like the back and a X8 or X16 board will not install without modifying the connector on either the motherboard or on the video card.

I used my Dremel with a diamond grinding bit to put a notch in the front of the X1 slot that allowed me to install this X16 board. The surgery took about 2 minutes since I was trying to be careful and not let the diamond bit drift into the electrical contacts of the X1 connector.

Once installed, the HD5450 booted immediately under Windows 7 which saw the board as standard VGA and provided 800 x 600 resolution until I could get the drivers installed from the ATI CDROM. The Windows 7 performance went from 2.8 to 3.7, but what's really important to me is that all of the jerkiness that I experienced with the FX5500 is gone. I played a few games with decent results and watched a DVD movie. The PCI FX5500 was not up to either of those tasks.

I use the board in 1080P mode using a VGA cable. I also tried the board with HDMI and DVI. For both HDMI and DVI the adapter is configured to underscan by 9 percent by default! On my monitor, it results in a 1-inch black border on all 4 sides. To eliminate the black border, I adjusted the scaling option in Catalyst Control Center to zero. Go to "Desktop and Display" in CCC then right click the monitor icon on lower left. Choose "Configure". Then go to "Scaling Option" to adjust to zero.

I gave the board 4 stars because it did exactly what I had hoped for. It installed with no trouble of any kind, came with two extra brackets in case it was to be installed in a low profile case, and it supports HDMI. I was surprised that the HDMI port supports audio. The audio over HDMI worked fine after selecting HDMI audio as default in Control Panel and rebooting. Without rebooting, HDMI audio did not work.

The only manual is on CDROM. Sadly, the manual is not actually written for the HD5450, but instead is a cobbled together hack job that applies to just about any video board ever made by ATI (AMD). Without luck I consulted the manual to try to discover why several features in software were grayed out. In several software configuration screens there are option boxes that are completely disregarded by the manual. All of the overclocking options are grayed out. I held back a star because of the crummy manual and even crummier software with many options grayed out.

Most folks won't use the HD5450 in an X1 slot like I did. It will undoubtedly perform much better in a full X16 slot as intended by ATI. I just wasn't ready to throw in the towel on the Dell and didn't have too many other cheap options to try. Perhaps someone else with a Dell or similarly hamstrung computer will see this review and be encouraged to save some money too by taking a risk. If you do decide to grind away at a connector on your motherboard, may you have a steady hand, good eyes, and good luck. Check out the photos of this board installed in the Dell.

Wonderful basic video card!

This review is from: Sapphire Radeon HD5450 512 MB DDR2 VGA/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card 100291L (Personal Computers)
I can not recommend the Sapphire Radeon HD5450 more highly! This is a great card for the money for anyone needing a basic card. It is fully featured, with HDMI (and full support for audio over HDMI!), so anyone looking to hook up a HTPC or presentation computer to a projector or flat panel would benefit from this card. I purchased it so I could run dual monitors at work, and it is performing quite well. Installation was a breeze, and the drivers installed without a hitch. I had multiple options on how to configure my dual monitors, and figuring them out was easy and intuitive. Another benefit is that since the card has no fan, only a passive heat sink, the card is totally silent, again, a great benefit for HTPCs! If you are a gamer, I would recommend a more powerful card...this card IS DirectX 11 compatible, but it doesnt have much 3D horsepower for the latest games. That being said, for the price, you cant really complain about its shortcomings.

Nice cheap card
This card works well. It did not cost a lot of money and since it does not have a fan, it is as quiet as can be.

Not right for HTPC
I think this is probably a fine card for most, but I have a PC set up as a HTPC. The on board HDMI doesn't carry the load very well, so I thought this would be perfect.

Do *NOT* buy, a waste of money.
This graphic card is just a waste of money. Honestly, I didn't expect it to perform very well, I just bought it to watch 1080p HDTV videos.

A+++
Using this in my HTPC and it works very well. The card is pretty small and does exactly what it advertises. Pass through of DTS is great, and the picture is incredible.
