I've used a 5200, X800, X850, X1900, X1950XTX, 7800GTX, 8800GTS, 8800GT, GTX260, GTX285, 5850, 5870, and now the 5970. As you can now tell, I'm not partial to either ATI or NVIDIA, but I am a fan of good performance in general. I will usually go for whoever has the king of the crop, whether it be all out performance or money for the dollar. In the case of the 5970, you definitely are not getting cheap performance, but you do get what you pay for in high-end bliss!! I purchased this card a few months ago from a local store. I admit I was thoroughly surprised they even had one of these for sale at this place. It's a small, local chain of computer repair/sale shops. Anyway, they were selling the card for $649, so even after the tax I got the card for the same price I would have buying it online. It was a good deal... especially since it always sucks having to wait on shipping. I was using the following rig with this card over my first weekend with it. In case anyone is wondering, I used to be restricted to using only micro atx motherboards because I had an Antec Mini P180 micro atx case at the time of these purchases. I had taken out the bottom hard drive rack (thank god it's removable) in order to fit the past couple cards. This 5970 is definitely the longest I've ever used. Also, the motherboard I owned was NOT built to handle any overclocking whatsoever. I could never get any stable overclocks with the following setup. Intel Q9400 @ stock 2.4ghz settings 4GB DDR2-800 memory Sapphire 5970 with 10.3 Catalyst (current drivers) Windows 7 64-bit (fresh install) I knew that my system was starting to show its age but I didn't realize by exactly how much. When I started using the 5970 in this setup I noticed a difference in Crysis and Crysis Warhead, but in most of my other games I didn't really see a huge benefit over my GTX285. The framerates were slightly better, but I wasn't getting the framerates that the reviews and benchmarks all over the web were getting. Here's the numbers I was seeing in my tests with this last-gen setup. All tests were taken at 1920x1200 resolution and with maxed out graphics detail with any exceptions listed next to the game. I used FRAPS for the majority of the benchmarking, unless the game had a built-in tool. Crysis Warhead - No AA - 29-41 seemed to be the typical framerate range I was getting here... little lower dips here and there but only for a second or so. Metro 2033 DX10 (DX11 supported but KILLS framerates) - 33-85 was commonly seen. It seems with the highest settings turned on the major lighting REALLY drops the framerates on this title. You can go from 80fps to 24 just by turning a corner and walking into a room with special lighting effects. Counter Strike Source - 255 avg (caps at 300 and I hit 300fps for about 30% of the test) World in Conflict - 21min/43avg/97max - used built-in benchmark test World of Warcraft - Dalaran 16-20fps - Zangarmarsh - 44 avg Far Cry 2 - 71min/81avg/120max UniGine benchmark tool - default settings - 4min/28avg/73max 3DMark Vantage - 13300 (rounded to nearest hundred) Needless to say, I was not impressed and not happy with the performance I was getting here after having spent $700 on this card. It didn't seem worth it... and for the price paid, it is NOT. After researching online, I came across a brand new article that showed me what this card could really do if aided with the proper system to run it. Amazon prohibits external links so I will tell you how to get to the article I read. Using the google search engine, search for "Radeon 5870 crossfire cpu scaling" and check out the "Performance Part 2" article there. It is a great one that shows fairly close to what you can expect to get from the 5970, when combined with the proper system to run the card at its true potential. It was because of this article that I decided to step up and order a new motherboard, cpu, and memory to run with this 5970. I ordered these parts and put the setup together. I stayed up until 2:30am running a bunch of tests. I simply could not stop until I had finished initial testing. I was hooked, lol. New setup listed below. Intel Core i5 750 quad core OC'd to 4.0ghz 4GB DDR3-2000mhz speed memory (huge increase over 800 speed!) Sapphire 5970 (of course) New Antec Nine Hundred Two Case So here are the results from the new setup. Crysis Warhead - No AA - I seemed to average a fairly stable 55fps the majority of the time now. Once in a while I'll see fps dip into the mid-40's but the majority of the time I was getting a solid mid 50's. I would often see highs get into the 60's and even break 70fps. It was incredible! Finally!!! A setup to run this game *well*! World of Warcraft - Dalaran.............. omg........... really!?........... 41-46fps average, even with 50+ people onscreen. This is so cool! Anyone who's played this game and had the misfortune of entering this city knows the frustration it will bring about to any system. I was very inspired that I could handle this. I didn't think anything could at maxed out settings. Zangarmarsh I was seeing about 90fps average now. Counter Strike Source - 296fps... once again... because the benchmark was limited to 300fps in this game, and I now ran the test at 300fps for 97% of the testing time, who knows what the average really would be if it was not limited. Far Cry 2 - didn't change much, was seeing roughly the same framerates. Not sure why this was the case here, but this game ran well anyway, even before. Metro 2033 - My average framerates seemed to stay in the 58-85 range, but I'm still seeing dips into mid 20's in those severe lighting situations (VERY demanding game!!) UniGine - 8min/55avg/150max - big improvements here too 3DMark Vantage - 22700 (rounded to nearest hundred) Needless to say, by simply upgrading from my older setup to an overclocked i5 with some fast DDR3 memory, I have seemingly doubled my framerates in most cases. I am stunned at how well this card really dishes out as long as it's given the proper setup. Suggestion here... stick with a 5850 or GTX285 if you are also limited by your cpu and memory. Now in some cases, even an older E8500 OC to 3.6ghz can perform very well with this card, but it's still not going to be as good as an i5. Also, having seen the benchies from that article I see that the i5's are beating the i7's in framerates when run at the same frequencies. Good deal for me... I saved money by going with an i5 instead of the i7... and I didn't have to slouch on the performance. If anyone would like to request any information and has a game they would like me to benchmark... or perhaps run at a lower resolution, I would be happy to do so. I will do my best to support any and all requests. I wrote this review to provide good information to anyone who wants to know what this card can do. I think I really showed how the cards performs both in last-gen and current-gen equipment. I hope you got some good information out of this and hopefully it has pointed you in the right direction. Happy gaming everyone! **** Update **** I purchased a new 30" LCD monitor with a 2560x1600 native resolution. Most of these games still run very well at that resolution. I ended up leaving Crysis and Metro 2033 at the 1920x1200 resolution on the new display because even with this monster rig they start to struggle a bit at higher detail settings when using the 1600p resolution range. If you plan to use this resolution and still play any game on max settings and maintain perfect framerates you are going to want two 5970's. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Rocks! This review is from: Sapphire Radeon HD 5970 ATI Video Card - 2GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready, Dual DVI, Mini Display Port (Personal Computers) I've had this card for over 4 months now. Works perfect! I was surprised at how quiet this card was with the stock fan. But I added an Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME. It is now whisper quiet and runs cooler. I bought this card after I purchased a Dell U2711 high resolution monitor (2560x1440, 27" widescreen). I found I had to crank down my video setting in World of Warcraft on the this new monitor. Decided to upgrade my video card and spent time researching and debating the value of a high priced video card (and this was the highest priced card around). Obviously I decided to go for it. I now have amazing high res graphics. WoW runs on max resolution with all video settings on Ultra (everything as high as it can go) and I still get great framerates. Yes I know the U2711 is not a gaming monitor, it is an artists monitor - and yes I know WoW is not the most graphics demanding game either. However, the game experience is gorgeous. I have no regrets. Only down side to this video card - it is very expensive. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Mmmmmonster Kill! So right off the bat I had to buy an adapter for $110-$120. My other complaint is that ATI makes the minimum effort to provide help in setting up either Eyefinity or Hydrovision. Luckily, Eyefinity can be set up with a bit of trial and error. However switching between profiles is still giving me fits. Forget about Hydrovision...it is beyond me to utilize it effctively. Aside from those features that could be easily addressed and solved by ATI the card is superb. Installs easily (it is a long card)and software updates are timely. The card itself is worth 5 stars but software support and misleading specs force me to downgrade to 4. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Great Card but Fan Control Issues This review is from: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 2 GB DDR5 HEXAD MINI DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 100290SR (Personal Computers) I was playing Crysis at 50FPS and the system would crap out. After playing with the Catalyst control Center I realized the problem. The Fan wasn't ramping up to deal with the heat. The fan always stays at 20% regardless of what is going on. I solved the problem very easily. I set up profiles to run the card with different fan settings and shortcut keys to set the profile. example ctrl+Shift+A is default. ctrl+shift+z takes it to 30% overclocked to 900 and 1300(Maximum OC allowed). Fan running at 20% is silent but 30% sounds like a gaming rig. Higher than 30% is noticeably loud. By the way the fan exhausts air so your system is kept cooler. On the other hand the card is very big and lies right on top of my Northbridge. I believe that my Northbridge is running around 5" hotter due to placement of the card. Sorry I haven't played with the Eyefinity yet, am just using 1 monitor. I just wanted the upgrade option. I'm very pleased with the card as it's running Metro 2033 at 50FPS. Many people forget that a system is only as fast as the slowest component. My components are all 7.6 and above in the Windows Experience Index. I strongly suggest that you combine an SSD Drive with this card because my FPS have been higher on my configuration than on the reviews of equivalent hardware and the only difference is that I'm using an G.Skill SSD Drive with Sandforce controller. |

I was one of the millions that Amazon disappointed by cancelling my HP mini order due to their mistake posting a very low price. But that is a different review. So since the deal was gone I focused on what I wanted for features. * I wanted at least a 10" widescreen display the Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 has an 11.6" and the + is that it is a very high resolution screen. Fantastic is a good adjective to describe it. * I wanted built in Bluetooth, easy to engage with two options one is the easy button next to the Wi-Fi and the second is the F3 option when holding down the fn button. * I wanted the extended battery life. 8+ hours even more if I work in power saver mode (but it dims down too much, so for the sake of my eyes I will rarely use this option) even though the Ac power adapter is small after the first few days of use I stopped caring it because the battery life is so good. What I did not realize is that the extended life battery also extends the battery itself making it bulker than the photo. The photo shows a flush fitting battery if you order this expect an extended size. * I wanted at least a 120 GB hard drive, this has 250 GB * I wanted the 2 GB RAM, this allows Vista to operate properly and not slow down the system. The + is that it comes with Vista basic, saves me the trouble of installing it. But expect when connecting to the internet for the first time that the updates to the operating system and to the software to be time consuming. * I wanted to pay less than $400 I got to pay $450 can't always get what you want! But over all I am very happy with my purchase. I have owned and used this computer for two weeks, I usually use an item a month before I review it, but since this computer is so light weight and portable I have taken it every were and used it enough so I could recommend it. What I experienced using my Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893: * The Atom processor is great it does not heat up and it is super quite. Once I removed all the junk that is preinstalled on the computer (most computer not just this) it is fast. I preferred the Atom N270 or N280 but this Atom Z520 is just fine. I have not owned either N Atom so I can not give my opinion about performance difference. * The key board is comfortable to use and the touch pad is nice. (could be a few mm wider to allow the full benefit of the Flick, Pinch and Circular features) It would have been nice to have an access button to the web cam. Like I mentioned earlier the Bluetooth has two easy access buttons but the web cam has none (that I have detected) In conclusion this netbook looks and feels rugged and sturdy the screen is glossy so expect a fantastic picture and the battery life is great so you'll use it a lot. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Much better then I expected it to be!! Vista Home basic is OK This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers) This is my first NETBOOK, all my other computers are desktop and homebuilt. The price for the Acer was good and is just about right for what you get. 2 gig of ram, 250 gig hd and a almost full size keyboard. The junk free software was removed - the first time on line - it did take a while for VISTA to upgrade but I left the NETBOOK plugged into AC power and had no problems. Note: do charge the battery prior to first use. Vista is not my OS of choice, I prefer XP Home Media Edition but this VISTA home basic is not bad nor does it seem to slow up the NETBOOK. True on bootup it is slow but it is a NETBOOK with a 1.3 cpu for goodness sake (smile)... over all I give it FIVE STARS with the note that the keyboard is just a wee bit tight for my BIG FINGERS! Take care. Ed 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful: Just get rid of Vista for XP or Linux and it is an AWSOME netbook. This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO751h-1893 11.6-Inch Black Netbook - 8 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers) Acer is under the obligation to put Vista due to licensing in machines "capable" of running vista. At 2GB ram, it is "possible" to run Vista, but Vista is a dog in almost any machine! particularly with all its bloatware and excessive service packs and security "band aids" + resident antivirus. YES, the Acer' processor is only 1.33mhz which is not "powerful" per se but the memory more than makes up for it in XP and Linux. There is no other full size keyboard netbook with a 6 cell battery for the price. I tried the Toshiba "9 hour" netbook, but the keyboard was too small, the display way 10" vs. 11", and really, the processor at 1.6mhz is not much of an advantage over Acer's 1.33mhz. I happily surf the net, do Skype, Word, XL and even watched an episode of 24 streamed[...] with no issues.....any heavy powerpoints I leave to a full power notebook or desktop, but for most daily applications, it works just fine! I suggest you do this to get the best performance and great user experiece........From the wizard, generate the "recovery disks" when you get the machine, should you want to put everything back to factory. Get a copy of XP home, Partition the 250gb drive into half so you may house both Linux and XP.....install XP first in the 125gb partition (you can download the drivers), then go to the UBUNTU site ([...]) and get the netbook tweaked version of desktop ver 9......not only does it come with all the "office" (as in MS office) stuff and most anything you'l need, it is EASY TO USE (i.e. it mimics windows operations, auto-installs, auto detects, auto-does, even the wireless network detection, etc. everything).....and you'l find yourself using windows less and less in favor of Ubuntu (which is a version of debian Linux, but extremely user friendly, particularly to the Windows user). Diamond ATI Radeon HD5850 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5850PE51G
Manufacturer : Diamond Model : 5850PE51G ASIN : B002Q6RNTM Price : 204.99$ See Special Offers Product DescriptionRADEON HD5850 PCIE16 1GB GDDR5 2PORT DVI DP 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful: Great cards This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5850 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5850PE51G (Personal Computers) Wow great cards, bought two of these for eyefinity and crossfire. With the latest catalyst driver it shows that crossfire is enabled in windows 7. Looks like I got them at the right time before the price increase. Run everything at max settings World at war looks great, and they are almost silent. Great cards I would recomend to anyone. This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5850 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5850PE51G (Personal Computers) I replaced my ATI Radeon 4850HD with this 5850. Great improvement in the games I play (Battlefield 2: Bad Company, Fallout 3). I am finally able to game in full 1920x1200 resolution! The price here on Amazon was in-line with Newegg, and actually less when I factored in shipping (Prime). The entire Radeon 5000 line is priced above retail everywhere right now anyway, but Amazon was closer than most. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using Catalyst 10.2 would not give me a rating on the video. I updated to the beta 10.3 drivers and it scored 7.6 out of 7.9 on graphics. The 4850 was 7.3. Doesn't sound like much, but, like I said, the improvement was enough to take me from 1280x720 to 1920x1200. This was also due in part to the increase of RAM from 512MB GDDR3 on the 4850 to 1024MB GDDR5 on the 5850. Even with possible competition from Nvidia coming this year (Fermi), I am very happy with this purchase. The price is not anticipated to drop more than $30 to $50 when Fermi hits anyway. As of today, Fermi will be shipping with fewer cores than anticipated (480 vs 512), so that launch may not have any impact on the Radeon 5000 line anyway. The power draw on this is less than the 4850 as well. I have a PC Power & Cooling 750 PSU and it is plenty. So, great card, good deal. You'll love it if you get it! I am running an older Intel Quad-Core, Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz, with 4GB DDR2 RAM, and dual 150GB Raptors in RAID. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful: Great card, but really big This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5850 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5850PE51G (Personal Computers) After a couple of weeks of running this on Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Left for Dead - both, and Star Trek Online, the card has worked great. It's fast and stays cool and doesn't get too hot or noisy. I did have to get a larger power supply to handle the card, but they're cheap and easy to install. The card however does take up the size of two slots on the motherboard and I had a couple of transistors/something that stuck out and wouldn't let the card seat properly. Luckily the card's shroud had vents in that area and after snipping a few to open it up, the card finally fit. Then the tubes sticking out the side interfered with the placement of my second hard drive and it had to be moved. This was placed in a Dell Inspiron 530, a great desktop, but it's smaller form factor made it difficult to get the card in, so it wasn't the cards fault. So far I'm happy with the card! a great bolt on for your PC This Card can't be beat for the money. I have to say that the drivers on this one were a pain to install. I was upgrading from an nVidia card and wanted to give ATI another chance. After going though the process of cleaning the old drivers after failed installs it did finally work. Now that it's running it's very good. I'm mostly just using it for Starcraft 2 and WoW with 2 monitors at 1900x1200 each. This review is from: XFX RADEON HD 5850 1 GB DDR5 PCI Express Card HD585AZNFC (Personal Computers) I have more than six months with the card and I can tell you the following: Pros: everything is OK with the card, and yes is Reference one, I can play at a resolution of 1680x1050 almost all the titles with the maxed configuration and keep the Games over the 42FPS (I think this is the perfect resolution for this card). * the card is rather quite and works cool, in idle with the fan set to 36%, the temp is about 36C and on load (playing the Bad company) with the fan set to 65%, the temp is about 60C. Cons: for some reason ATI doesn't want this card controls the revolutions of the fan by using the settings predefined in the BIOS of the card, the drivers in windows are taking control of the fan and avoiding the fan increase the revolutions no more than 27% while the temp is about 75C that is so hot. * To solve this problem, you'll have to use a third-party software known as "Afterburner" from MSI to override the action the drivers cause to the fan, and you could make your own configuration to keep your card cool as possible. Also there is another software to control the fan revolutions, the Sapphire TRIXX. Other Thoughts: I think could get be better FPS, just need a better CPU, mine is a AMD Athlon II X3 435. Nice and sleek This is the best bang for the buck. I love this card, period! The warranty is the best around which sold me. by Vy Tran Everything is great, but expect noise when fans hit >30% If you're looking at this card, I'm sure you already know all about how great the performance is so I won't go more into detail about that. by Z Zhang JUST BUY IT! This card plays anything you throw at it at highest settings. Once you have a good board/processor/ram combination you are good to go. by Fresh-biscuit |

I purchased the D250 to replace a Dell 700M which I have loved, but even at only 4.5 pounds gets heavy with all its gear on trips - and 1280x768 on a 12" screen is starting to get hard on older eyes. I did plenty of research and decided on the D250 over the Asus 1008 and Samsung NC10 primarily due to it's weight and styling - and the combination of a white shell with a black keyboard. I had counted out the HP and Dell for various reasons - most notably battery life. First impression out of the box of the D250 was extremely good: fit and finish is excellent - with the exception that the hard drive bay door wasn't put on right and was warping up (a tab wasn't seated). A quick unscrew and reseat fixed that, but I was surprised it shipped that way. Also note that the battery seats very firmly (a big plus) and the unit is very solid feeling. After the initial Windows setup I was disappointed at the performance until I realized there was a huge drain being put on the system by the included trial version of McAffee. I uninstalled that and the system is quite snappy - very comparable to my 700M. I'll use CA AntiVirus or AVG instead (seems to have a lower system overhead) and the D250 is performing MS Office and Internet browsing tasks admirably. I did just upgrade to 2GB of RAM using the Crucial DIMM offered here by Amazon. Everything seems to be fine with it and I haven't noticed any compatibility issues. I also haven't really noticed any performance changes, but I had very little "before" experience on which to judge. After everything is now running I have to say I'm very impressed and satisfied with this little machine. Very solid, nice screen, usable keyboard and touchpad, and decent performance. If I had to point to anything I would consider a disappointment, there would be 2: 1. Screen brightness settings (on aC or battery) don't seem to be properly retained across boot/restart and when toggling between AC and battery power. So, sometimes I'll restart and it will remain t level 7 where it was when I shut down, and sometimes it will revert to level 5 on restart. 2. Wireless doesn't maintain On/Off status of what it was on shutdown - it always comes back to On after a restart. That's about it. I also found a Targus Slipskin Peel neoprene slipcase (at Walmart for $[...]) that fits the 250D with the 6Cell battery perfectly. TSS11103US. P.S. - there are two different versions of the 6-Cell battery for the D250, a 48kWh and a 58kWh version. My unit from Amazon had the 48kWhr version (est 6hr battery life). Hope this helps. ** UPDATE (7/15/09) ** My "disappointment #1" (screen brightness issue) was corrected in a recent BIOS update. Now, the last setting is maintained (although not independently for battery and AC) across reboots. However, the brightness will still drop 2 levels if you disconnect AC power while running. But at leastthe behaviour is now consistent. Also, I have now been able to (i.e. had reason to) test the System Restore capability and it worked flawlessly in putting the system back exactly as I received it, without the need for recovery CDs. Very impressed. One last note: While this unit may not have Bluetooth built in, don't feel you have to spend an extra $[...] (or get a different model) just to get BT. You can find many extremely small USB BT dongles that work just fine and cost next to nothing. I got one that you can barely see (about the size of a Logitech Nano transmitter) and it cost a whopping $[...] online. The Aspire One recognized it and installed automatically and it works perfectly - for $[...].
Hi, this video is a demontration of the Acer Aspire One in action, well sort of, it mostly shows you where the ports are located, how many, where is the hard drive and ram located and a little show of on how video and audio looks and sound on this netbook. Hope you find this video informative or at least lets you take a look at what you wanted to see about the product. It can do pretty much anything. It plays music exceptionally well, most games (like the Sims2) work great on it as well. The keyboard is awesome, and very very easy to get used to (I've only had this little guy for four days, and after downsizing from a 17" laptop to this 10.1", I'm proud to say I'm already used to the keys). If you're thinking about getting this, I strongly recommend it. Don't be wary. The price is extremely cheap, but that term does not describe its build. It is very tightly wound. Feels very durable, can be lifted with one hand, and the ports are fresh and tight, everything (from what I'm told by my nerdy cousin) you could dream of having in a new computer. The screen size is perfect as well, just big enough for movies, games, even multitasking. Going from a 17" screen to a 10.1" feels like no change at all it's that amazing. Try it. You will LOVE it.
